The Platonic Tradition in English Religious Thought, (Paperback)

"The Platonic Tradition in English Religious Thought" explores the profound influence of Platonic philosophy on the development of Christian spirituality and theology within the English tradition. Written by the distinguished theologian William Ralph Inge, the work posits the existence of a vital "third tradition" in Christian history-one that stands apart from both rigid institutionalism and narrow scriptural literalism. This tradition, deeply rooted in the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Plato and the Neoplatonists, prioritizes the inner life, the pursuit of absolute truth, and the direct, mystical experience of the divine.

Through a series of insightful analyses, Inge examines how this philosophical current has shaped English thought, from the intellectual contributions of the Cambridge Platonists to the works of various poets and divines. The book emphasizes the reconciliation of reason with revelation, advocating for a religion of the spirit that is both intellectually rigorous and spiritually profound. By tracing the continuity of these ideas, "The Platonic Tradition in English Religious Thought" provides an essential historical and philosophical perspective on the foundations of Anglicanism and the broader search for a rational yet contemplative faith. It remains a significant contribution to the study of religious philosophy and the enduring power of Greek thought in the Christian world.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
