Poems and Rhymes For The Littlest Heroes: Poetic Tools for Transforming Trauma

Across the world, millions of people courageously struggle to build a life of dignity and hope following the trauma of sexual abuse. The Littlest Heroes is an engaging guide that blends the artistry of words and images with the science of the brain to educate trauma survivors, therapists, and loved ones. Poetry and illustrations give voice to the many layers of suffering, while charting a path of resilience for survivors. Grounded in current research, The Littlest Heroes identifies the emotional, behavioral, and neurological manifestations of sexual trauma. The first four chapters identify the dynamics of emotional functioning impacted by sexual abuse. The author uses poems, discussion questions, meditations, and illustrations to address the complex reactions of trauma survivors. Poetic “power tools” encourage survivors to explore emotions, while developing coping skills, agency, and resilience. The final chapter examines the elegant design of the brain and its response to trauma and includes poems and illustrations to help simplify the complex material. Designed for use with children—only in a therapeutic setting—the material is also relevant for adults addressing their own abuse, either as a child or as an adult. Additionally, loved ones are invited to embark on a poetic journey that illuminates the struggles of their beloved. The Littlest Heroes is an accessible resource for survivors rebuilding their lives and a unique addition to the therapist’s tool box. Read more
